Gii is Writing a New Immigrant Story

What if at risk populations, such as immigrants, in the US, could find well-paying jobs that desperately need to be filled?  …And what if we could give them everything they require to support and prepare them for such jobs? Gii has identified such an employment opportunity and implemented a program in partnership with the public and private sector, and with other charities. Our program prepares at-risk populations to take the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exam, bridges into paid apprenticeships, and then segues to permanent employment.

In 2022, the US struggled with a shortage of 78,000 commercial drivers. That number is projected to rise to 160,000 in the coming years. What an opportunity for our clients!  Here’s what we’ve implemented with the collaboration of our partners.

Our

Overseas Mission

Workplace Readiness Program

Gii implemented workplace readiness programming in Saudi Arabia to address deficits in job skills, enabling teenagers and young adults to enter the workforce better prepared. By up-skilling and empowering students, Gii aided in efforts to reach national goals under Saudi Vision 2030 and the United Nations Social Development Goals. In 2022, 60 students participated in this program, but this program is projected to experience exponential growth in 2023 and beyond. Gii has partnered with KEYSS Project, a Saudi Arabian organization dedicated to preparing young adults for the workforce.

International Teacher Training Program

It’s hard to imagine a more efficient way of fulfilling our educational mission than by training teachers themselves.  Each one we train will touch a generation of children.  Thus, we’ve partnered with organizations in various countries to implement our International Teacher Training Program. We provide structured learning opportunities to educators around the world, who reside or teach within impoverished communities or nations. Initially beginning with the Republic of Guinea, we now have partnerships in Uganda and Haiti and are looking forward to developing our relationships in the Philippines, India, Japan, and Thailand. We anticipate working with 100-150 schools worldwide as the program grows.

More Collaborations on

Education

  • Books make a profound difference in children’s lives and many homes do not have a single book. We’re partnering with Language Lizard, who will supply us with their books at discounted prices to help the students and children enrolled in our programs– specifically those with low English-language skills–improve their language acquisition and adjustment process in a fun, kid-friendly way. Gii volunteers will distribute the books to all participants in our academic skills program.

  • Gii is collaborating with IACT to mentor refugees between the ages of 15 and 26. IACT has received a grant and will send a mentor to the refugee’s homes a few times each month. The mentors will talk to them about the challenges they're encountering. Mentors are also prepared to discuss financial literacy, academic and job-related support, and leadership skills. High schoolers attending Gii’s academic support program will benefit greatly from this offering.

  • Gii is partnering with EnGen to offer ESL to refugees so that they can become well-versed in survival English. In addition, participants in Gii’s online CDL will take the EnGen language assessment, and where needed, will take EnGen’s online ESL.

We’re partnering with Eagle Online English for ESL classes for Afghan refugees and HofT Institute for ESL classes for Ukrainian refugees.

Emotional Wellbeing

the final element

Immigrants and other at-risk populations often come from harrowing experiences–from living in a real war zone to living in a metaphorical war zone with absent parents, abuse, drug addiction, etc.  Gii designs comprehensive solutions because that’s the most effective way to launch people into new lives.  By partnering with BetterHelp, we offer mental health counseling and advice to our clients.
