Online and On-Site Academic Support, Mentoring, and Sport-Based Enrichment for Refugee Students
Refugee children often arrive in the United States with limited and disrupted educational experiences. Many are not yet fluent in English, and most arrive having left behind nearly all that is familiar, including their schools, routines, and support systems.
From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Central Standard Time, Monday through Thursday, the Gii team takes a multifaceted approach to supporting these students through online and on-site academic tutoring and mentoring. Tutors provide homework support and remedial ESL instruction, helping students strengthen core academic skills and build confidence in the classroom. Along the way, mentors help students understand behavioral expectations in U.S. schools, retain a positive ethnic and cultural identity, and remain engaged in their learning, all of which are essential for successful integration and long-term academic growth.
To further support students’ holistic development, the program also offers sport-based enrichment activities, particularly on weekends and during school breaks. Through a running club and team sports such as soccer, cricket, and basketball, students engage in structured physical activity that promotes wellbeing, teamwork, leadership, and belonging. These activities create additional opportunities for connection, reinforce positive habits, and support social and emotional development alongside academic progress.
This integrated approach to learning, mentoring, and enrichment has been highly effective, and the program currently has a waiting list of more than 200 students. If you would like to serve as a tutor or mentor, we invite you to contact us and experience the joy of helping change the course of a child’s life.
